Biography

Charalampos Sigalas is a BHF Intermediate Basic Science Research Fellow at the University of Oxford specializing in the study of intracellular ion channels, particularly focusing on ryanodine receptors and their roles in muscle cell function. His research investigates how mutations in RyR2, the cardiac isoform of ryanodine receptors, can lead to cardiac diseases and arrhythmias. Likewise, mutations in RyR1 can cause skeletal muscle disorders. Sigalas aims to understand the structure and function of these receptors under normal and pathological conditions in cardiac and skeletal muscles, as well as in the brain, where ryanodine receptors participate in calcium signaling pathways crucial for neuronal processes. His work seeks to provide insights into intracellular calcium dysregulation and its contributions to various diseases, while also exploring potential novel compounds that interact with ryanodine receptors to develop new treatments for RyR-related diseases.
