Charbel Darido graduated with a Master's in Endocrinology and Physiology, completing PhD studies on colon cancer at the University of Montpellier in France. He moved to Australia to conduct post-doctoral studies at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne, where he initiated a cancer project that led to the identification of a critical tumor suppressor gene in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of head and neck tissues. Subsequently, he relocated to Monash University to lead a cancer program in the epidermal development laboratory at The Alfred Centre. He has been appointed as Group Leader for the Cancer Therapeutic Program at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where he established a vibrant research program focused on head and neck cancer. His main research focus is on developing model systems for investigating head and neck SCC, with an emphasis on studying initiating lesions and identifying the cellular origins of cancer. His laboratory studies the molecular basis of cancer, investigating basic mechanisms of tumor suppression, signal transduction dysregulation, and SCC pathogenesis. His work includes using genetically engineered mouse models and orthotopic SCC xenografts to translate molecular insights into new strategies for preventing and treating these diseases.
