Dr. Charis Thompson

Biography

Charis Thompson is a prominent scholar in the fields of Sociology and Women's Studies, currently serving as a professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She previously held positions at the University of California, Berkeley, where she was actively involved in exploring the intersections of science, technology, and society. Her influential work includes publications such as 'Making Parents: Ontological Choreography of Reproductive Technologies' and 'Good Science: Ethical Choreography of Stem Cell Research,' which have made significant contributions to understanding the ethical implications of scientific advancements. Thompson has received numerous accolades for her teaching and academic contributions, notably the UC Berkeley's Social Science Distinguished Teaching Award and the prestigious Rachel Carson Award from the Society for Social Studies of Science. In addition to her research, she has served on various councils, including the Nuffield Council on Human Genome Editing and the World Economic Forum's Global Technology Council. Thompson holds a PhD in Sociology with a concentration in Science Studies from the University of California, San Diego, and a BA in Philosophy, Psychology, and Physiology from the University of Oxford. In 2017, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for her services to science and society by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. During the 2020-2021 academic year, she was a Visiting Professor at Princeton Institute for Advanced Study.
