Biography

Professor Charles Coombes is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Oncology at Imperial College London and a Hon Consultant Medical Oncologist with the Imperial College Healthcare Trust. He served as the Director of the Imperial CRUK Cancer Centre and was the Chair of the Imperial Cancer Research (UK) Centre Steering Committee. His research is focused on developing novel methods to predict responses to endocrine therapy in breast cancer and understanding the mechanisms behind resistance to such therapies. He has led a division responsible for over 280 scientific staff and has substantially expanded the department. Professor Coombes' laboratory is dedicated to elucidating molecular signals that control abnormal growth in breast cancer cells, with specific emphasis on the estrogen receptor and its associated signaling pathways. His work includes identifying molecular targets for new therapies and running a translational laboratory that concentrates on detecting micrometastatic disease for treatment in breast cancer. He has also chaired an international collaborative cancer group that conducts multinational trial studies in breast cancer.
