Biography

Charles L. Cooney is the Robert T. Haslam Professor Emeritus in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He began his academic career at MIT as an Assistant Professor in 1970 and became a full Professor in 1982. Cooney earned his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and his master's and PhD degrees in Biochemical Engineering from MIT. Over the years, he has made significant contributions to the fields of food and pharmaceutical bioengineering and has been recognized with various awards, including the Gold Medal from the Institute of Biotechnological Studies in London and the Food and Pharmaceutical Bioengineering Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has also received the James Van Lanen Distinguished Service Award from the American Chemical Society's Division of Microbial and Biochemical Technology. Besides his academic pursuits, Cooney has served as a consultant and director for numerous biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, as well as on the boards of professional journals.
