Dr. Charles Foster

Biography

Charles Foster is a member of the Oxford Law Faculty, where he serves as a Visiting Professor, and is a Senior Research Associate at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, which is part of the Faculty of Philosophy. He also holds positions as a Research Associate at the Ethox Centre and the Health, Law and Emerging Technologies Centre at the University of Oxford. Having obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge, his research primarily focuses on how the law deals with human autonomy and dignity in medical decision-making. Foster’s contributions include influential litigation in key medical law cases and extensive writings on medical law issues, ethics, and the intersection of law with moral philosophy. His recent books address themes like the legal status of animals, personhood, and the ethical implications of medical decisions.
