Dr. Charles Helwig

Biography

Charles Helwig is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology, University of Toronto. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and his B.A. from the University of Chicago. His research examines the development of moral and social judgments from preschool years into adulthood, with a focus on the development of moral concepts related to societal issues and social institutions, including freedoms, civil liberties, and democracy. He has investigated children's understandings of democratic decision-making rights within the context of society, exploring large social contexts such as family, school, and peer groups, along with cross-cultural research conducted in China and Canada. Professor Helwig is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Educational Research Association. He is currently an Associate Editor for the British Journal of Developmental Psychology and a member of the editorial board for Human Development, having previously served on the editorial boards of Child Development Monographs and the Society for Research in Child Development.
