Biography

Charles Holahan received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has served as a visiting faculty member at the Center for Health Care Evaluation, Stanford University School of Medicine. Holahan's research focuses on Health Psychology with specializations in stress coping and addictive behaviors. His work on stress coping investigates resistance to stress and identifies factors that differentiate individuals who remain healthy from those who become emotionally or physically ill under life stressors. His research on addictive behaviors explores social influences, such as the relationship between depression and cigarette smoking, maladaptive coping in alcohol abuse, and how smoking levels relate to alcohol consumption. He has been recognized with several teaching awards including the Jeanne Holloway Award, the President's Associates Teaching Award, and the Raymond Dickson Teaching Award, and is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers.
