Dr. Charles Holton

Biography

Charles R. Holton is a Clinical Professor Emeritus at Duke University School of Law, having served as the founding director of the Civil Justice Clinic. He has been instrumental in teaching seminars and mentoring students on basic civil litigation skills while overseeing the handling of actual cases for clients seeking adequate representation within the civil justice system, in close collaboration with lawyers from Legal Aid North Carolina (LANC). Retiring in 2024, Holton established the Civil Justice Clinic in 2014 to operate in partnership with LANC and has been a long-standing member of the local advisory committee for the Durham office. He has been recognized as the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year by the North Carolina Bar Association in 2013 and received the Pro Bono Award from the national Legal Services Corporation in 2012. Apart from his contributions to legal education, Holton presides over the non-profit Caris Foundation, which provides education, housing, and health services in Honduras, Africa, and Durham. He currently serves on the Pro Bono Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association and has held the position of past chair of the Construction Law Section. Additionally, Holton acts as an arbitrator for the National Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association and the American Health Law Association. Throughout his 40-year law career, he worked as a litigator in private practice, dealing with cases including products liability, construction, and professional negligence in both state and federal courts across North Carolina and other states.
