Biography

Charles Insley studied at the University of Oxford, where he received his doctorate in 1998 with a thesis on the pre-Norman Conquest archive of Exeter Cathedral. He held positions at Canterbury Christ Church University, Northampton University, and Bangor University from 1995 before becoming a Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Manchester in 2012. He served as the head of the History Department from 2018 to 2021. His research interests focus on the Atlantic Archipelago during the Middle Ages, particularly from 800 to 1100. Insley has published extensively on Anglo-Saxon charters and the concept of state formation, and he recently completed a biography of Athelstan, the king of the English, published by Routledge in 2023. Current projects include examining intercultural connections across the Irish Sea from 800 to 1150. Insley is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and actively supervises Ph.D. students researching various aspects of British history.
