Biography

Charles Insley studied his undergraduate and doctoral degrees at the University of Oxford, receiving his Doctorate in 1998 with a thesis on the pre-Norman Conquest archive of Exeter Cathedral. Before joining the University of Manchester in 2012, he held academic positions at Canterbury Christ Church University, the University of Northampton, and Bangor University beginning in 1995. He served as head of the History Department at Manchester from 2018 to 2021. Insley is a historian focused on the Atlantic Archipelago during the Middle Ages, especially between 800 and 1100. His published work covers various aspects of English and Welsh history during this period, and he is currently researching the comparative study of queens and elite women in the Atlantic Archipelago during the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries. He has completed a biography of Athelstan, the King of England, with Routledge in 2023. Additionally, Insley teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses on the Medieval World and the perspectives of Middle Ages and Renaissance, with research interests spanning Insular History and state formation in Britain and Ireland.
