Biography

Charles Larmore is a philosopher primarily engaged in moral and political philosophy. He previously taught at Columbia University and the University of Chicago before joining Brown University in 2006 as the W. Duncan MacMillan Family Professor of Humanities. An esteemed author, he has published twelve books, including 'Les Pratiques du Moi,' for which he received the Grand Prix de Philosophie from the Académie Française in 2004. His recent works include 'Autonomy and Morality' (2008), 'Das Selbst in seinem Verhältnis zu sich und zu anderen' (2017), 'Political Philosophy?' (2020), 'Morality and Metaphysics' (2021), and 'De raisonnables désaccords' (2022). Larmore's scholarship has largely focused on the foundations of political liberalism and the nature of self and moral judgment. He has explored the metaphysical implications of moral reasoning and the intricate relationship between virtue and the self. Additionally, he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
