Biography

Charles Marcus is the Boeing Johnson Endowed Chair Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Washington. He completed his PhD in Physics at Harvard University in 1990 after obtaining his BS in Physics from Stanford University in 1984. Before joining the University of Washington in April 2023, he was a faculty member at Stanford University from 1992 to 2000 and at Harvard University from 2000 to 2011, where he also served as the Director of the Harvard Center for Nanoscale Systems from 2006 to 2011. He held the position of Villum Kann Rasmussen Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen from 2012, where he directed the Center for Quantum Devices, and was the Scientific Director of the Microsoft Quantum Lab in Copenhagen from 2016 to 2021. His research is primarily focused on experimental condensed matter physics, including quantum coherent electronics and quantum matter, specifically qubits, quantum chaos, complexity, and topology in condensed matter. His long-term goal is to investigate large-scale interconnected quantum coherent topological systems to enhance the fundamental understanding of complex quantum materials and their applications in quantum information.
