Charles R. Martinez, Jr. is the 12th dean of the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin, having begun his tenure in January 2019 after being named dean-designate in July 2018. He holds the Lee Hage Jamail Regents Chair and the Sid W. Richardson Regents Chair. As a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, Martinez also has appointments in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education and the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy. He is the founding director of the Center for Research on Community Impact, which is dedicated to conducting applied research to eliminate disparities in education and health. His research focuses on identifying factors that hinder success among vulnerable children and families, with a specialization in education and health disparities. Martinez has led numerous national and international research projects aimed at understanding risk and protective factors among Latino children and families and developing culturally specific interventions. His work has resulted in over $48 million in federal and international grants. Prior to his current position, he served as the Philip H. Knight Professor at the University of Oregon, where he also held leadership roles and taught courses in educational leadership and prevention science. Martinez earned his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from Pitzer College and the California School of Professional Psychology.
