Biography

Charles Mather’s research and teaching interests focus on material culture, medical anthropology, and mass culture, with a specific emphasis on comics. The disruption caused by the pandemic motivated Mather to delve into the literature and historical contexts of comics. His current research explores the marked decline in comic print runs alongside the increased prevalence of comic adaptations in various media, including television and film. He is developing a research program aimed at examining these shifts and their implications within the comic industry. Mather has over six years of experience supervising students in West Africa, utilizing ethnography to study local populations in Ghana and understanding their methods of decision-making in health treatments. Presently, his students have concentrated their research on the integration of biomedicine and ethnomedicine for the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries in Northern Ghana. His preliminary findings have led to the production of a manuscript currently under review, laying the groundwork for proposals to expand the scale of this research.
