Dr. Charles Mather

Biography

Charles Mather is a faculty member in the Department of Geography at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His research interests lie at the intersection of globalization, economy, and resources, with a particular focus on sustainable communities and regions. Mather has explored the political economy and ecology of salmon aquaculture in Canada, contributing significantly to the discourse surrounding food systems and environmental governance. He has collaborated on various projects, including examining the impacts of feed in animal agriculture alongside colleagues from the Department of Political Science. Mather's work has been influential in shaping current debates around agro-food politics and sustainability, reflected in his active participation in the Science and Technology Studies Food and Agriculture Network (STSFAN). He holds a degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Master’s from the University of British Columbia, and a PhD from Queen's University. His recent publications include articles in prominent journals such as Progress in Environmental Geography and Marine Policy, focusing on regulatory frameworks and the socio-environmental implications of aquaculture practices.
