Biography

Charles Meneveau is the Louis M. Sardella Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and serves as the associate director of the Institute for Data-Intensive Engineering and Science (IDIES). His research focuses on large-eddy simulations (LES) and the multiscale aspects of turbulence, emphasizing advanced modeling techniques for turbulent flows, particularly in wind energy applications. He has contributed significantly to the development of subgrid-scale models and downscaling methods, using theoretical and computational tools to gain insights into complex fluid dynamic behaviors. His notable work includes improvements to LES techniques aimed at enhancing performance in environments with complex geometries, vital for wind farms. Meneveau's research program also emphasizes democratizing access to turbulence data through the Johns Hopkins Turbulence Database (JHTDB), which provides researchers worldwide with user-friendly access to extensive datasets generated from direct numerical simulations. His accomplishments include over 250 peer-reviewed publications, participation in numerous interdisciplinary collaborations, and recognition as a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He holds degrees from the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María and Yale University.
