Biography

Charles Menzies is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. His primary research interests include the production of anthropological films, natural resource management, particularly related to fisheries, and the political economy of contemporary Indigenous issues. He has conducted extensive field research in British Columbia, Canada, and has produced films in various locations, including Brittany, France, and Donegal, Ireland. Menzies is a member of the Gitxaała Nation on the north coast of British Columbia and is enrolled in the Tlingit Haida Tribes in Alaska. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Simon Fraser University and York University, along with a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from the City University of New York. His current research project, Laxyuup Gitxaaɫa, focuses on archaeological and socio-cultural anthropology to document the traditional territory of the Gitxaaɫa Nation. Menzies is also the Director of the Ethnographic Film Unit at UBC and coordinates the ecological anthropology research group.
