Charles Miller is a Senior Lecturer in Art History Theory at the University of Manchester. His research interests include history theory in modern and contemporary art, particularly the historical avant-garde. He has published extensively on topics related to surrealism, including a notable article in the journal October titled 'Surrealism's Homophobia', which critiques the surrealism's position within the historical discourse of sexuality. His current book project, 'Surrealism Dissidents: Sex, Magic, Theory', examines the function of magic in modern art. Miller's work has also focused on Pablo Picasso, notably in his award-winning book 'Radical Picasso: Use Value Genius', where he challenges the concept of aesthetic genius in understanding European modernism. He holds degrees in English Language and Literature from Magdalen College, Oxford, and an MA and PhD in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art. Prior to his appointment at Manchester, he taught at the University of Essex and the Courtauld Institute of Art and has received several accolades, including the Phillips Prize and Leverhulme Fellowship. Miller welcomes PhD proposals related to historical avant-garde and contemporary art, especially those that explore the intersection of art, magic, and theory.
