Dr. Charles Monroe

Biography

Charles Monroe is a Professor in the Engineering Science Department at the University of Oxford, where he has been since 2015. He previously worked as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Monroe earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, near his hometown of Palo Alto, California. His research focuses on the development of modeling for electrochemical devices, specifically in the areas of energy storage and conversion. Monroe's interests lie primarily in batteries and fuel cells, exploring both theoretical and experimental routes to improve their performance and longevity. His group's projects include the theoretical description and experimental characterization of next-generation batteries for vehicles, the development of affordable and durable high-capacity batteries for wind and solar power systems, and the analysis of heat generation, swelling, and degradation in lithium-ion batteries. Monroe collaborates with a variety of multinational companies, including Robert Bosch LLC, Ford Motor Co., General Electric, DENSO, and Procter & Gamble, emphasizing practical applicability in his research.
