Dr. Charles Newton

Biography

Charles Newton is the Cheryl and Reece Scott Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the epidemiology and behavioral consequences of children experiencing various adversities in low-income countries, particularly in relation to autism and developmental disorders. He is involved in investigating the interplay between infections of the central nervous system, such as malaria, HIV, and bacterial meningitis, and their impact on neurodevelopmental conditions. His work also encompasses the epidemiology of psychiatric co-morbidities, with a particular focus on epilepsy in sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, he examines the neurocognitive consequences of sickle cell disease in affected populations, as well as mental health issues within immigrant groups in the UK and Europe. Throughout his career, Professor Newton has led significant research initiatives in neurodevelopmental disorders, contributing to our understanding of both causes and consequences of these conditions across diverse populations.
