Biography

Charles Nolan is a Professor of Economics at the University of Glasgow and holds the Bonar MacFie Chair in Economics. He received his education from the University of Strathclyde and Birkbeck College, University of London. Professor Nolan has a significant background, having worked for eight years at the Bank of England as a banking supervisor and economist in the Monetary Assessment Strategy Division. He has also lectured at the University of Reading and served as a Reader in Economics at the University of Durham. Before joining the University of Glasgow in 2010, he was a Professor of Economics at the University of St Andrews, where he co-founded the Centre for Dynamic Macroeconomic Analysis with Jagjit Chadha. He is an Associate Editor of the European Economic Review and sits on the International Advisory Board of the Scottish Journal of Political Economy. Nolan was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2015 and served as President of the Scottish Economic Society from 2020 to 2023. He served as a Commissioner of the Scottish Fiscal Commission from 2016 to 2017.
