Biography

Charles Romain is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London. He leads the Poly(Cat) lab, a research group focused on developing sustainable polymers from renewable resources, and designing new metal catalysts to improve material end-of-life. His academic journey began at the Université de Rennes 1, where he earned his Master’s degree in engineering from École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Rennes (ENSCR) in 2008, followed by a Ph.D. from Université de Strasbourg in 2011. His thesis centered on the synthesis and reactivity of group 4 metal complexes bearing NHC ligands with applications in ring-opening polymerization of cyclic polar monomers. After working as a Research Scientist at Econic Technologies, he joined a multidisciplinary EPSRC project focused on biomass valorisation. He became an independent researcher as a Junior Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London in 2016 and was appointed Lecturer in April 2022. His work has led to more than 30 publications with over 1500 citations and includes 3 patents and 3 book chapters.
