Biography

Charles Stocking specializes in the history and philosophy of the body, sport, and physical culture from Ancient Greece to the present. He has authored several books, including 'Homer's Iliad Problem of Force' published by Oxford in 2023 and 'Ancient Greek Athletics: Primary Sources Translation' published by Oxford in 2021. Stocking has a noteworthy background as a certified strength and conditioning coach with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, having coached seven varsity teams and individual Olympic athletes at UCLA Athletics from 2004 to 2008. His current research focuses on the role of Classical Antiquity in shaping modern scientific discourses on race, gender, and health. He obtained his Ph.D. in Classics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2009 and both his B.A. and M.A. in Classics from Stanford University in 2002. His work contributes to ongoing discussions in the fields of sport, body politics, and education, investigating how classical frameworks can enhance contemporary educational practices.
