Biography

Charles Villarrubia is a distinguished Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Texas at Austin's Butler School of Music. He received his degrees in music performance from Louisiana State University and Boston University. A prominent performer, Mr. Villarrubia has been a member of notable ensembles including Dallas Brass and Waterloo Festival Orchestra, and has performed with esteemed orchestras such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. His contributions to music also extend internationally, where he has performed and served as a guest clinician across four continents. Mr. Villarrubia’s discography includes recordings with acclaimed labels such as Telarc, Angel, EMI, and Koch. He has a rich teaching history, having been a faculty member at Boston University, Boston Conservatory, New England Conservatory, and Longy School of Music. In 2011, he commissioned a significant work for the solo tuba and orchestral winds, resulting in the premiere of Concerto for Solo Tuba, Winds, Percussion, and Piano with the University of Texas Wind Ensemble. His dedication to teaching excellence has been recognized with the Butler School of Music Teaching Excellence Award in 2017 and the College of Fine Arts Distinguished Teacher Award in 2019.
