Dr. Charles Vincent

Biography

Charles Vincent is a trained clinical psychologist who has worked in the British NHS for many years. In 1985, he focused on conducting research on the causes of harm to patients and the consequences for both patients and staff, along with methods for improving safety in healthcare. He established the Clinical Risk Unit in the Department of Psychology at University College London. In 2002, he became the Professor of Clinical Safety Research in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London. From 1999 to 2003, he served as a Commissioner for the UK Commission on Health Improvement and acted as an advisor on patient safety inquiries including the Bristol Inquiry and the Parliamentary Health Select Committee. Between 2007 and 2013, he was the Director of the National Institute of Health Research Centre for Patient Safety and Service Quality at Imperial College. In January 2014, he moved to the Department of Experimental Psychology to support the Health Foundation and continue his work on safety in healthcare. His research interests focus on understanding how healthcare can become safer, particularly analyzing how errors occur, the psychological impact of medical errors on patients and staff, and developing teamwork training programs. Vincent also studies the challenges posed by home healthcare, developing strategies to provide training and support for families managing complex clinical tasks, and works on improving safety in low-resource healthcare settings around the world.
