Biography

Dr. Charles M. Vollmer is a Professor of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Penn Medicine, where he also serves as Chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Director of Pancreatic Surgery. He is the co-director of the Penn Pancreatic Cyst Multidisciplinary Program. Dr. Vollmer specializes in the surgical treatment of complex pancreaticobiliary conditions and is heavily involved in research focused on clinical outcomes in high-acuity surgeries, particularly pancreatic fistula management. His extensive academic contributions include 200 manuscripts, 40 book chapters, and 3 books dedicated to pancreaticobiliary diseases. A distinguished member of numerous national and international surgical societies, he has held leadership positions including President of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and Treasurer-elect of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. He has also participated in the editorial boards of several prominent surgical journals. Dr. Vollmer completed his medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University and underwent surgical training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, followed by a fellowship at the University of Toronto in Hepatobiliary Surgery. He began his career as an attending surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and has been recognized with the Josef Fischer Traveling Fellowship from the American Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.
