Biography

Charles von Simson teaches the Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic at the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he supervises students advising inventors, founders, and early-stage companies. He teaches courses in intellectual property licensing and brings extensive experience from his previous career. Prior to joining the UW faculty, he was a legal subject matter expert for a Toronto startup that developed a machine learning-driven legal technology platform. In this role, he worked with a team of machine learning engineers to train and test algorithms designed to engage in sophisticated legal analysis and replicate lawyers' workflows. With twenty years in private practice in New York, he specialized in intellectual property transactions and litigation, serving as lead counsel in complex negotiations in both state and federal courts. von Simson began his legal career as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge John T. Curtin and was an associate at prominent law firms including White & Case LLP and Reed Smith LLP. He is a founding partner of von Simson & Chin LLP and a partner at Barclay Damon LLP. He is a member of the New York and Wisconsin bars and was named Empire State Counsel by the New York State Bar Association in 2017 for his commitment to pro bono work.
