Biography

Charles Walton is a historian specializing in eighteenth-century France and has served as the Director of the European Historical Research Centre. He is currently based at the University of Warwick's History Department after teaching at Yale University, the University of Oklahoma, and Sciences Po in Paris. His research interests include the Ancien Régime, the Enlightenment, and Revolutionary France, focusing especially on themes of human rights, political economy, and socioeconomic justice. Walton’s award-winning book, 'Policing Public Opinion in the French Revolution: Culture, Calumny, and the Problem of Free Speech,' published in 2009, highlights the early failures to regulate free speech during the French Revolution and its consequences for political polarization. He has also edited a collection of essays honoring Robert Darnton, titled 'Print: Limits and Legacies of the Enlightenment'. Walton has received Leverhulme funding to create a network dedicated to social rights and has published important works such as 'Social Rights: Politics and Obligation in History' (2022). He is actively developing new research networks focusing on the history of duties as they relate to rights.
