Charlie Warren holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Tasmania and a PhD from the University of Western Australia. After completing his PhD, he worked in Canada as a postdoctoral researcher for several years. In 2003, he returned to Australia to take on a highly competitive Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Melbourne. In 2006, he moved to the University of Sydney, where he initially held an ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship and subsequently an ARC Future Fellowship. Now a professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, he leads a laboratory focused on plant-soil interactions and ecosystem processes. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of photosynthesis limitations and investigates a range of projects on plant-soil interactions and biogeochemistry. Over the past decade, he has contributed to debates on the soil nitrogen cycle and the role of organic nitrogen in plant nutrition, and he is currently examining microbial phosphorus economics. Professor Warren has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and is recognized as being in the top 2% of his field from 1996 to 2018.
