Charles J. Werth is the Bettie Margaret Smith Chair in Environmental Health Engineering at the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the UT Austin faculty in August 2014, after spending 17 years on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University and both his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in environmental engineering from Stanford University, where he also obtained a Ph.D. minor in chemistry. His research and teaching primarily focus on the fate and transport of pollutants in the environment, including the development of innovative catalytic technologies for drinking water treatment and mitigation of environmental impacts associated with energy production. He has served on the EPA’s Science Advisory Board and is a fellow of the Association of Environmental Science and Engineering Professors. His past recognitions include several awards for his research, including the Editor’s Choice Paper Award from Environmental Science & Technology. Additionally, he has been honored with the Humboldt Research Fellow Award and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
