Biography

Charlie Ryan is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, specializing in Astronautics and the development of low-cost micro-propulsion systems for small spacecraft. With a focus on electrospray thrusters and Hall effect thrusters, he explores novel approaches to enhance propulsion efficiency. Ryan earned his PhD from Queen Mary University of London in 2011, where he investigated the effects of applied voltage in the electrospray process with the aim of applying these findings to spacecraft propulsion. Following his PhD, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher concentrating on the MEMS electrospray thruster for CubeSats as part of the European Commission's FP7 'MicroThrust' Project, which involved experimental characterization of silicon-manufactured micro-electrospray arrays. In 2014, he transitioned to the University of Surrey’s Space Centre as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow, where he contributed to the development of a low-cost Hall Effect-like thruster, significantly enhancing its performance. His ongoing research interests include small chemical propulsion systems, especially those utilizing hydrogen peroxide.
