Biography

Charlotte Hemmings is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics at the University of Oxford. Her research interests encompass language documentation and description, with a particular focus on Austronesian linguistics and syntactic typology. Hemmings has worked on an AHRC-funded project titled ‘Enggano Austronesian family: Historical typological perspectives,' which aimed to document and describe the Enggano language, spoken by approximately 1,600 speakers on Enggano Island, located off the south coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. This project has resulted in a comprehensive collection of audio and video recordings of the Enggano language, a descriptive grammar, and teaching materials for the Enggano community. Additionally, her research includes a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship where she explored the information structure in the languages of Northern Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Her work combines documentation of these languages, including Kelabit, Lun Bawang, and Sa’ban, with an analysis of the role information structure plays in determining syntactic choices. Hemmings' PhD research focused on the Kelabit language and aimed to establish parameters of variation within the Western Austronesian context, contributing to ongoing theoretical and historical debates.
