Biography

Charlotte is a lecturer in the Department of Genetics, leading the Virus Genomics group. She studied Human Sciences as an undergraduate at the University of Oxford before completing a PhD in Molecular Biology at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Charlotte has worked at the UCL Institute of Child Health and in the Department of Medicine here in Cambridge. Her research focuses on human genetic immunological variation and how it shapes viral diversity, which in turn influences human evolution. She studies the evolution and diversity of double-stranded DNA viruses, specifically human pathogens causing diseases such as respiratory infections, fever, chronic nerve pain, and cancer. Utilizing whole-genome sequencing, her work allows for tracking the spread of viruses in space and time, detecting drug resistance, and observing the emergence of novel recombinant strains, as well as studying the ancient evolution of successful human pathogens.
