Professor Charmaine C. Williams joined the University of Toronto in 2002 and is currently serving as the Dean of the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. Her research bridges practice and access equity issues affecting populations such as racial minority women and LGBTQ individuals, in both local and international contexts, particularly individuals and families affected by serious persistent mental illnesses. Charmaine has significant clinical experience within the mental health care system and has been involved in organizational change initiatives within the healthcare sector. She has extensive experience in developing and delivering professional education in areas such as anti-racism, cultural competence, and mental health addictions. Recent activities include serving on the expert panel for the Mental Health of Black Canadians Initiative with the Public Health Agency of Canada and participating in the Anti-Racism Advisory Panel that developed the race-based data collection policy for the Toronto Police Service. Before taking the role of Dean, Charmaine was the Vice-Dean of Students at the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto and held several key positions including Anti-Racism Cultural Diversity Officer, Associate Dean Academic, and Provostial Advisor for Access Programs. Currently, she also holds a cross-appointment with the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
