Dr. Chas Bountra

Biography

Chas Bountra serves as Pro-Vice Chancellor of Innovation at the University of Oxford and holds the position of Head of Impact and Innovation in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine. He is also a Professorial Fellow at Keble College, Oxford. Chas is a recognized expert and has contributed significantly to government and charitable research funding bodies, advising academic institutions, biotech companies, and pharmaceutical drug discovery programs. In 2012, he was honored as one of the top innovators in the industry and received the prestigious Rita John Cornforth Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2014. He has been featured on the Medicine Maker Power List multiple times and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in the New Year’s Honours List in 2018. Before returning to Oxford, Chas held the position of Vice President and Head of Biology at GlaxoSmithKline, where his contributions led to the identification of 40 clinical candidates for various diseases. He played a pivotal role in developing treatments for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and established a pioneering research group specializing in human protein structural biology at SGC-Oxford, greatly impacting drug discovery and research.
