Biography

Chase Sanborn grew up in suburban New York City and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. He spent formative years in the music scene of San Francisco, highlighted by an extended international tour with Ray Charles. After moving to Toronto in 1981, Chase became a mainstay in the jazz and commercial music scene. His extensive list of credits as a session musician includes appearances with Aretha Franklin and Diana Krall, along with thousands of performances in Broadway shows and commercial recording sessions. As a bandleader, Chase has released five CDs featuring Toronto jazz luminaries such as Mark Eisenman, Reg Schwager, Rob Piltch, Steve Wallace, Pat Collins, and Barry Elmes, with special guest appearances from Guido Basso and Carol McCartney. An esteemed member of the University of Toronto Jazz faculty since the early 1990s, he teaches Applied Trumpet, Improvisation, Jazz History, and Small Jazz Ensemble, and coordinates a weekly jazz masterclass series. He is also the webmaster for the U of T Jazz website. Chase has authored a series of educational books, videos, and CDs, and published his 7th book, 'Brass Tactics 6/60 Routine' in 2016. He wrote a brass column for Canadian Musician magazine for a decade and has served as the editor and jazz columnist for the International Trumpet Guild Journal. A longstanding Yamaha Artist, Chase has presented clinics in schools and organizations across Canada and the United States.
