Dr. Che Yeun

Biography

Che Yeun is an Assistant Professor in History at Texas A&M University, specializing in the history of science and technology. Her research primarily explores the ideas, tools, and techniques used to manipulate the human body during the late 19th and 20th centuries. Yeun highlights the underexplored connections between science, industry, and consumer culture, focusing on how these elements transformed the rituals involved in cleaning and controlling bodies in everyday life. Her work addresses how these rituals are intertwined with potent social norms surrounding smell, color, texture, and the shape of bodies, linking them to notions of race, class, gender, and beauty—marking them as clean or unclean, desirable or undesirable, and notions of belonging. Her research has garnered support from esteemed institutions such as the Science History Institute, Hagley Library, and the Consortium of History of Science, Technology, and Medicine.
