Biography

Chee Tan is a Professor and the Head of the Mechatronics Engineering degree program at Monash University Malaysia. His primary research interest lies in observers and the development of model-based observer configurations and design methods to accurately estimate unknown signals in dynamic systems. His research focuses on condition monitoring and the prediction of future phenomena, leading to significant cost savings, increased productivity, and energy savings, while also preventing breakdowns. He has published extensively in top-tier journals including the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and Automatica, applying his methods in areas such as lighting, soft robotics, and traffic energy management. Chee has attracted significant research funding amounting to RM1.5 million from government and industry sources. He has supervised seven PhD students to successful completion and currently oversees thirteen PhD candidates. With a commitment to student-centric learning, Chee employs innovative teaching strategies to demystify complex subjects in Control Theory. His contributions to education have been recognized with awards from Monash University, including being a finalist for the 2018 National Outstanding Educator’s Award.
