Biography

Chelsea Foxwell is a Professor in the Department of Art History and East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. Her scholarship spans medieval to modern periods of Japanese art, with a special emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. She was a co-curator of the exhibition "Meiji Modern: Fifty Years New Japan" and authored the book "Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting: Kano Hōgai and Search Images" published in 2015. In 2012, she co-curated the exhibition "Awash in Color: French and Japanese Prints" at the Smart Museum of Art. Currently, she is working on a book project that examines Edo-period paintings and prints. Foxwell is a member of the Committee on Japanese Studies and contributes to digital projects focused on Kuzushiji reading. Additionally, she serves as the Director of the Center for East Asian Studies.
