Chen Mao is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin and a Principal Scientist in the Small Molecule Pharmaceutics group at Genentech, Inc. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Physical Pharmacy from Purdue University in 2006. Prior to joining Genentech, he held scientist positions at XenoPort and Schering-Plough. Dr. Mao co-chairs the Materials Science Predictive Modeling Working Group of the IQ Consortium and serves on the editorial board of the Drug Development and Industrial Pharmacy journal as well as the scientific advisory board of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His primary research focus is on solid dosage formulation development and the manufacturing of small molecule pharmaceutical compounds. He investigates the behaviors of pharmaceutical powders involved in drug product manufacturing, including powder flow, compaction, mixing, and segregation, using both experimental and computational approaches to develop predictive tools for commercial-scale drug product manufacturing. Additionally, he is interested in applying predictive modeling to the fundamental processes involved in solid dosage form performance such as dissolution, disintegration, and relaxation, employing mathematical tools to develop models for a comprehensive understanding of pharmaceutically relevant processes at both mechanistic and phenomenological levels.
