Biography

Cheng Zhu is a Regents' Professor at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and an adjunct professor in Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech. He began his research career as a theoretician building mathematical models of cellular processes. Since joining Georgia Tech in 1990 as an Assistant Professor, he has established a laboratory that conducts a full spectrum of integrated experimental, computational, and theoretical studies in bioengineering. Dr. Zhu's research focuses on cellular and molecular biomechanics, spanning single cells and single molecules, cellular adhesion kinetics, and bio-MEMS. His research aims to gain a fundamental understanding of important biological processes at the molecular and cellular levels, particularly relating to human health and disease. Current focus areas in his lab include the study of adhesion and signaling molecules in the immune and vascular systems, employing advanced technologies such as micropipette manipulation and atomic force microscopy. His work has substantial implications for cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune disorders. Dr. Zhu's research is primarily funded by the National Institutes of Health.
