Biography

Cherie Metcalf is a Professor and Associate Dean (Research) at Queen's University Faculty of Law. She holds a BA (Hons.) from Queen's University, an MA and PhD in Economics from the University of British Columbia, an LLB from Queen's, and an LLM from Yale. Metcalf's research leverages economic theory and empirical methods to examine Indigenous rights, particularly in relation to the Supreme Court's section 35 Aboriginal rights cases and the impacts of governance on resource industry participants. Her scholarship focuses on the role of law, specifically constitutional rights, in shaping individual decisions and social norms. She has made significant contributions to environmental resource law, with recent work centered on climate change. Metcalf's work has been published in notable journals including Northwestern University Law Review, International Review of Law & Economics, and the Canadian Public Policy. She has received grants from the Canadian Foundation for Legal Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Additionally, she has served as a visiting scholar at the University of Colorado. She offers courses in public law, constitutional law, economics, and international environmental resource law. Metcalf coached the Queen's Laskin moot team and has held academic leadership roles, including Associate Dean Academic from 2015 to 2018.
