Biography

Cheryl L. Mitchell is an Associate Teaching Professor and the Academic Director of the MBA in Sustainable Innovation at the University of Victoria's Gustavson School of Business. Her research investigates how contextual phenomena such as crises, moral distress, systemic blame, and climate change affect leadership, collaboration, and institutional decision-making within health systems. She has published her work in leading healthcare journals, including the Medical Care Research & Review and the Journal of Healthcare Management. Notably, she co-authored an article on crisis leadership that was recognized as the Paper of the Year by the Medical Care Research & Review. Cheryl is also a co-founder of the Academy of Management's Crisis Leadership Research Network and serves as the incoming co-chair of the AOM Health Care Management Division's Practitioner Table. In addition to her academic research, Cheryl actively contributes to interdisciplinary health policy initiatives across Canada. She holds various roles, including being the academic co-chair of the Academic Perspectives at the Rural Coordination Centre of BC, a research fellow at UVic's Institute on Aging & Lifelong Health, and an affiliate of Gustavson's Centre for Regenerative Futures. Cheryl's professional experience prior to academia includes working extensively in public service as a healthcare consultant and facilitator, which continues to inform her qualitative, phenomenon-based approach to research and leadership curriculum innovation.
