Biography

Cheryl Webster holds an M.A. in Sociology from Instituto Superior de Ciências Trabalho e da Empresa in Lisbon, Portugal, and a Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Toronto. She was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto, before accepting an academic position at the University of Ottawa, where she is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Criminology. Her initial research focused on examining the role of two-tiered criminal trial courts in Canada, including the use and value of preliminary inquiry and the investigation and case processing in provincial superior courts. Additionally, her research has concentrated on the effectiveness of general deterrence applied in sentencing, as well as a comparative analysis of policies related to imprisonment in Canada and abroad.
