Biography

Cheryl Wellington is internationally recognized for her work on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism in the brain, contributing significantly to the understanding of the role of apolipoprotein E (apoE) in late-onset Alzheimer's Disease. ApoE plays a critical role in repairing damaged neurons after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Her research program is closely linked to initiatives exploring the vascular system's contributions to metabolic disease and dementia. Additionally, her team developed a novel, non-surgical animal model of concussion that accurately mimics the biomechanics and neuropathology associated with human head injuries. Current projects include drug discovery efforts aimed at enhancing apolipoprotein function in the brain for applications in Alzheimer's Disease and TBI, understanding the correlations between head movements and behavioral/neuropathological outcomes, and employing tissue engineering techniques to investigate cerebrovascular function in health and disease.
