Dr. Chetan Bhatt

Biography

Chetan Bhatt is the Anthony Giddens Professor of Social Theory at the London School of Economics (LSE) since 2010, where he has held multiple roles including Director of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights since 2017. Prior to his current position, he was a Professor of Sociology and head of the Department of Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Chetan has taught at the Universities of Essex and Southampton. He earned his PhD in Politics and Sociology from Birkbeck College, University of London, and his BA Hons in Social and Political Sciences from Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge. His key areas of expertise include social and political theory, human rights, and issues related to the far-right, racism, and nationalism. His current research focuses on the Euro-American far-right, identity politics, Dalit human rights, and the political dynamics of the South Asian diaspora. Chetan welcomes new MPhil/PhD students in areas concerning the international far-right and identity politics, among others. He has extensive teaching experience with a focus on human rights topics and has participated in discussions regarding the political violence and socio-cultural dynamics across various regions.
