Biography

Chi Ying Lam is a Lecturer in Community Music at the University of Southampton. She was born and raised in Hong Kong and completed her doctoral studies at the Royal College of Music in London. Her research primarily focuses on musicians' pedagogical practices and post-colonial discourses of power and identity within the music practitioner community. Chi holds a Bachelor of Education (Honours) and a Master of Arts in Music Education from The Education University of Hong Kong. She is actively involved in promoting social justice through music education and serves as the convenor for the Social Justice Special Interest Group within the British Educational Research Association. Additionally, she is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and participates in various organizations aimed at supporting refugee and asylum-seeking children. Chi has co-founded Bean Theatre, which is dedicated to preserving heritage languages through early years theatre. Her contributions to music education include serving as the Music Director and Organist at St Mary Magdalene Church, participating on the editorial board of the Music Education Research journal, and being a reviewer for the NIHR Reviewer Development Scheme.
