Dr. Chiara Cordelli

Biography

Chiara Cordelli is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago, with an affiliation in Philosophy. Her main areas of research include social and political philosophy, focusing on the intersection of political economy and democratic theory. Cordelli authored the book 'Privatized State' (Princeton University Press, 2020), which critiques privatization through a Kantian lens of democratic theory and public administration. The work has been recognized with the 2021 ECPR political theory prize. She has also co-edited 'Philanthropy in Democratic Societies' (University of Chicago Press, 2016) and served as editor for the NOMOS annual yearbook published by the American Association for Legal and Political Philosophy. Cordelli's research has been published in leading academic journals such as the American Political Science Review and Political Theory. She has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions including the Kluge Center at the Library of Congress and the Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard. Her current book project tackles a normative critique of capitalism and defends the concept of financial democracy, exploring distinct aspects of capitalism and its shortcomings.
