Professor Dr. Chiara Daraio

Biography

Prof. Chiara Daraio is a leading researcher in the fields of materials science and condensed matter physics. She focuses on developing innovative materials with advanced mechanical sensing properties for various applications such as soft robotics and wearable devices. Her research also explores shock and vibration absorption techniques. Prof. Daraio's lab investigates the physical functions that new materials acquire due to their micro- and meso-structure, analyzing both ordered and disordered media. Her work includes the development of advanced methods for acoustic imaging and thermal sensing, as well as health monitoring technologies, smart tunable fabrics, and sustainable materials for packaging and construction. Prof. Daraio’s approach is primarily experimental, supported by numerical and analytical studies that guide new material design and fabrication processes. She has a strong academic background, having obtained her B.S. and M.S. from the University of Ancona, Italy, and her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego. She joined Caltech as an Assistant Professor in 2006, was promoted to Professor in 2011, and currently holds the title of G. Bradford Jones Professor since 2021.
